Beginning, Middle, End, Beginning...

Beginning, middle, end. The parts of a story.
I like to think that the story of illustrating a picture book has a beginning, a middle, an end, and then another beginning?

I've just sent Charlesbridge Publishing the final artwork for "The Inventor's Secret". A longer than average picture book by author Suzanne Slade.  It's a lovely non-fiction story about the friendship between two amazing inventors, Thomas Edison, and Henry Ford.
I packed up the final artwork, a year and one month from accepting the project. I took some pictures along the way of the process. Care to take a stroll?

There is lots and lots of research to do on both ends of the book. The author finds the story, seeks out the facts, and the illustrator needs to show them to the reader. And that opens up its own can of worms.

My studio sprouts piles, like the weeds growing in my untended garden.

I looked to my own collections for inspiration. Old tintypes and antique photos...

Gears and old watch parts (Thanks, Stacia!).

And I even took a field trip--- to a car museum.

Don't I look happy to be there? This is my first ever car museum selfie!

 the middle...
sketches approved,
beginning to paint...
picking palettes.

The piles turn into landslides and messes.

And at the end...
There is a pile of watercolor paper with paintings on them.
It's a big pile, a very big pile.
And the artwork is---
done?
The End?

Nope-- In several months (Fall 2015), I'll get to post "The Inventor's Secret's" new beginning---

as a picture book!

The Book Owner

I opened an old book this wintry evening and found this lovely bookplate on the inside cover.

Such a sense of pride of ownership to have a book.

Sharing a bit of book love tonight…

Illustrating the Adventures of a South Pole Pig

If you happen to be in downtown Iowa City over the next several weeks, pop into the Iowa City Public Library and say 'hi' to Flora.

Here are some little snippets of a display that I've done in the Children's wing, "Illustrating the Adventures of a South Pole Pig."

I tried to show how an illustrator thinks about and develops a character.

I used the actual 'galley proofs' from the book as "wallpaper". These big pages show an illustrator what size to make the pictures and where they will be placed in the book.

The text that is pink highlights the passage that the art director and editor would like the illustrator to draw.

What a perfect time of year to stop into the ICPL!

"Hello, Flora!"

Building an ARC

Yesterday, I received my Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of THE ADVENTURES OF A SOUTH POLE PIG. A chapter book by author, Chris Kurtz and published by Harcourt Houghton Mifflin.

I did the cover and 23 black and white interior illustrations. Publishers send out these advance copies of the book to reviewers, librarians, bloggers, and various big cheeses in the kids' publishing world for comment. There are still uncorrected typos, it's paperback, and the page layouts are a little wonky.
But, it's so wonderful to see these characters come to life and live in a book!

A Weathered Word Book

I bought this book a few months ago at Artifacts. I thought the worn, bruised cover was lovely and would make a terrific backdrop for photographing jewelry. Today I opened it and saw what it really is. It's a very old school book.

Heavily used, but highly treasured. I thought of all the little hands that held it as they used it from "The First Year's Work" until "The Second Year's Work".

This old, battered book taught people to read and write.
 What a powerful, precious thing!
