Illustrated Me

I just hung my "illustrated me" doorknob hanger on the door to my studio.

This week, fellow illustrator Claudia McGehee and I did a presentation at the Iowa City Public Library. We spoke about what it's like to be freelance illustrators and did this craft with the kids.
There were an awful lot of talented young illustrators in attendance!

This is Oliver, our big poodle. He wasn't at the Library, but he's often in my studio.

Silly Little Things

I bought these funny little pins at Artifacts years ago.

I didn't know why I bought them.

And I don't know why I kept them.

But when I was drawing a pincushion this morning, look who appeared? Suddenly they were there without me even meaning to put them there--- without me even seeing them.

It's a snowy, blowy day here today---

I'm keeping warm, and drawing inspiration from silly, little things ;-)

Getting Ready...

Craft and Fancy 5 is this Saturday, Dec. 1st at Home Ec. from 10-5 in Iowa City.

I always go a little crazy--- so many wonderful bits and bobs that I've collected all year long. And never enough time to make them into all the jewelry that I've imagined.

But my sore little fingers are trying...?

Hope to see you Saturday if you're local, and if not, hope you pop into Age Before Beauty on etsy this Sunday for new listings in my shop.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Organized Chaos

Well, this may look like mayhem... or an I Spy photo... but it's really a sampling of some of the new/old/reconstructed necklaces that I'll be bringing to the Craft & Fancy Show here in Iowa City on Saturday, Dec. 4th.
More pictures later in the week... busy, busy, busy!

Wreathing...

Age Before Beauty offered to make wreath for a Festival of Trees fundraiser.

I started with this...
 And painted it white.
A forest of faux vintage bottle brush trees...

and some sweet vintage paper houses.

'Iced' the bases and covered up my gloopy glue with modeling paste.

I am the anti-Martha. I am messy, and sloppy, and incredibly impatient to see it done.

Beautiful vintage Christmas
balls in soft, muted hues.

Done.

Studio Shots #3

Feeling a bit of sensory overload lately. Every thing seems so much...
So much color outside.

So much color inside.
So much to do.
So much to be grateful for.
So much.

A Weighty Issue

A tiny history lesson...
Perhaps you know this, and if so you may wish to move on. But, this is something that I just learned---and this is the reason that I'm a collector and lover of old things. Because they have a past, a history and I absolutely adore feeling a part of its journey.

This is a necklace that will be listed in my shop shortly. The centerpiece is a beautiful, velvet covered, veil weight. I fell in love with its patina and then sought out its purpose.  From the mid 1800's to the turn of the century women wore long veils over their hats to protect their faces from the dust and wind. These lovely buttons were sewn to each corner of the veil to keep it from blowing away.

Learning about this custom explained some of the large, black, glass "buttons" that I have collected and have always thought would be odd additions to clothing. These black "weights" would have been used in mourning attire to weigh down a veil as well.

The very knowledgeable button expert from whom I purchased the velvet weight told me that they were even used at the corners of hankies to cover drink cups outdoors and keep out the bugs and dust.

Knowing all this makes this sweet velvet veil weight even prettier.
Even more precious.

Hints of Autumn

The burning bush is beginning to smolder.
The fields are aglow with ochre soybeans.
Cardigans have come out of the closet.
And strawberries have been replaced with butternut squash.
Night falls earlier.
Nudging out summer.
Hints of Autumn...

New jewelry coming soon to Age Before Beauty.

A Matter of Importance...

I've noticed a prevailing them in my work---Taking something insignificant and elevating it to a level of importance.
After all, it is quite arbitrary and subjective as to what art really is?
What is beautiful?
 What is important?
This is my entryway. The table is a magical and memorable table from my Grandmother's house. On it sits a destroyed and haphazardly repaired (by her many years ago) porcelain cherub. I change the items on the plate to suit the season... or my whim.
I've found these amazing little boxes lately. Isn't it funny how you seem to find things in batches? As if the planets and stars all align in some weird, "stunning box" order? Two are old prescription boxes from an extinct Iowa pharmacy. One is an antique 'mourning pins' box from Germany. And the lovely little jewel box--- with a mother of pearl button--- you push it and the top springs open. Bugs from my friend, Mark, at Decorum.
Nothing valuable.
Something precious.
Under an old glass department store display,
Because they're important to me.
